What a terrific initiative Renew Fitzroy Street is. We’re all aware empty shops are no good for residents, surrounding businesses, property owners and councils. The program gives great visibility and opportunity to emerging businesses, services, or creative industries that wouldn’t otherwise have this opportunity.
[The program] offers property owners peace of mind to have an occupied property, whilst feeling they are making a contribution to assisting emerging businesses and improving the amenity of the area.

St Kilda is still an extremely difficult area to lease at the moment given the dynamics although I’m sure the demographics, position and the work that Renew continues to put in will see a positive change.
With this change, Landlords like me will benefit long term. In the meantime if the empty shop can have vibrant short term operators creating colourful activity its a step in the right direction.
I am a firm believer in the saying – activity breeds activity. One of the greatest obstacles both a landlord and his agent must overcome with leasing vacant premises is the perception that there is something wrong with the location, the building, or the lease deal on offer because it is vacant – when in most instances it is other market conditions.
The Renew Cairns program activates the property and assists in driving new leasing inquiries. The tenancy itself is presented in a better light due to the occupant’s products on display and ease of access. Similarly, it assists in bringing any objections to the front of the conversation as it helps the prospective lessee to visualise the space as they would like to fit out to display their merchandise.
I would recommend the Renew Cairns program to property owners of properties that have been vacant for long periods of time, as it generates activity that leads to increased inquiries.

The Renew Team has been incredibly supportive and has been the key to our studio’s rebound post- covid…..Our existing clientele have been super excited to join us at our new location and we have new students joining us.
Our experience with the program has been great, having a studio to work from is a game changer. Our business has a lot of potential to grow this year because we are able to have fashion interns and host workshops but we need more time to see results.
This program is potentially life-changing. Although I’m only just in the beginning of it with Kindred Cameras, I would never have been able to pull something like this off on my own. I’m excited about the future and how this could change my own career path, as well as create a space to help out emerging image makers.
